Stephen Decatur biography

Stephen Decatur was a U.S. naval officer. At the age of 17, he supervised the the construction of the war ship United States. At 24, he fought in the First Barbary War against Libya. Decatur was subsequently promoted to captain, becoming the youngest man to reach the rank in the Navy's history. His heroism during the War of 1812 was impressive. He died in a duel with James Barron in 1820.
