Stephen A. Douglas biography
Born on April 23, 1813, in Brandon, Vermont, Stephen A. Douglas went on to be elected to the U.S. Senate in 1846. He supported the idea of popular sovereignty, where localized regions could decide slaveholding policies, and later created the Freeport Doctrine. He was the Democratic nominee for president against Abraham Lincoln and fought for the sanctity of the Union. He died on June 3, 1861.
