Stephen biography

Profile

Stephen of Blois, also known simply as Stephen, was born circa 1096 in central France. The grandson of William the Conqueror, Stephen served as king of England from 1135 to 1154 after he usurped the throne from his cousin, Matilda, Henry I's daughter. Stephen's reign was marked by civil war with Matilda, which was often called The Anarchy. Stephen died in 1154 and was succeeded by Matilda's son, Henry II, the first of the Angevin, or Plantagenet, kings.
