St. Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great, was said to have discovered the cross of Christ.
Believed to be born sometime around 248 A.D., St. Helena was married to Roman emperor Constantius and had a son who would become Constantine I, the first Roman emperor to become a Christian. St. Helena converted as well and oversaw the construction of churches on Holy Land sites. She would later be credited with discovering the cross upon which Jesus was believed to be crucified.
