Profile
Spartacus lived during the first century BCE. A Thracian by birth, he was enslaved by the Roman Army and trained as a gladiator. He later escaped and became leader of some 90,000 men in an uprising against Rome. The conflict came to be known as the Gladiatorial War and Spartacus is thought to have died during its final battle in 71 BCE. The remainder of his men were crucified by the Romans.
