Born on April 1, 1873, in Semyonovo, Russia, Sergey Rachmaninov was a conservatory student in St. Petersburg before embarking on a career that would produce magnificent compositions in the romantic tradition. Known for his rhapsodic piano-playing, some of his most well-known works include Prelude in C-Sharp Minor and the symphonies The Isle of the Dead and The Bells. Rachmaniov died on March 28, 1943, in Beverly Hills, California.
