Sebastião Salgado was born on February 8, 1944, in Aimorés, Brazil. He studied economics before embarking on a career as a photojournalist, capturing black and white images of people, including indigenous communities, across the world. Salgado gained wide recognition when he photographed John Hinckley Jr.'s attempt to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981. His books include Sahel: Man in Distress, Migrations and The Children, and he has worked with organizations like UNICEF and the World Health Organization.
