Though he had planned a career at his father's welding firm, Bean's talents took him in an entirely different direction when he discovered acting while studying art at Rotherham College. A handful of notable performances earned him a scholarship to the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and after graduation he began appearing in London theater productions, as well as on television and in movies.
