U.S. film director Sam Peckninpah entered the world of television in the 1950s. He wrote and directed for the Western drama Gunsmoke. His debut as a film director came in 1961 with The Deadly Companions, followed by Ride the High Country. Among his later films are The Wild Bunch, considered his finest, and Straw Dogs. His works are admired for their awe-inspiring landscapes and brutal violence.
