Saint Katharine Drexel dedicated her life and vast family fortune to the needs of oppressed Native Americans and African-Americans. In 1891, she established the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored People, personally financing more than 60 missions and schools around the American Southwest. Fifty-five years after her death, her sainthood was canonized in by Pope John Paul II.
