Ruth Draper was an American monologist who started out writing sketches about people she had observed and performing them at parties. Her New York debut in 1917 was followed shortly by her 1920 debut in London, after which she was proclaimed a master monologist. She always performed on a bare stage with minimal props. Her characters were created by subtle modulation of feature, gesture, and voice.
