Rufino Tamayo was a 20th century painter who studied art in Mexico and spent much of his life in New York. Artists such as Picasso and Matisse greatly influenced his work. He combined Mexican folk themes with the Surrealist and Cubist styles of the day, often in vibrant colors and textured surfaces. After an exhibit in 1950, he gained international fame. He also produced sculpture and murals.
