Roy Campanella biography
Roy Campanella, born on November 19, 1921, in Homestead, Pennsylvania, started pro baseball as a teen. Soon after he began playing in the Negro Leagues and becoming the first black catcher in Major League Baseball history upon joining the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was named MVP three times and reached the world championships several times as well. Paralyzed in a 1958 car accident, he persevered and worked as a coach and mentor. He died on June 26, 1993.
