Robert Woodrow Wilson is an American radio astronomer and physicist. He began his career monitoring radio emissions from a ring of gas encircling the Milky Way Galaxy. While working on an an antenna, he and a fellow physicist were troubled by a noise that they eventually identified as radiation from remnants of the big bang. Wilson became a member of the U.S. National Academy of Science in 1979.
