American poet Robert Lowell was born to one of Boston's oldest and most prominent families. He is the founder of the confessional poetry movement which emphasizes the intimate and often unflattering details about the poet's personal life. Lowell won the Pulitzer Prize in both 1947 and 1974 and the National Book Award in 1960 for his work. His students include Anne Sexton and Sylvia Plath.
