Robert Dinwiddie was a British colonial administrator who, as lieutenant governor of Virginia, helped precipitate the French and Indian War (1754 - 1763). His administration was marked by frequent conflict and controversy with the Assembly over finances, particularly his desire to institute taxes on land patents without the owners' consent. He left Virginia to retire in England in 1758.
