Richard Carlile was a radical British journalist who was a prominent advocate of almost all the radical causes of his time, including the freedom of the press, abolition of monarchy and the emancipation of women. He was imprisoned in 1819 and heavily fined for for publishing the writings of Thomas Paine and edited 12 volumes of of the weekly journal The Republican from his cell.
