Recep Tayyip Erdogan became prime minister of Turkey in 2003 and is one of Turkey's most popular politicians in part due to his vision of Turkey's economic interdependence in the Arab world. Erdogan was formerly the mayor of Istanbul, a term that ended badly with his imprisonment in 1998 for inciting religious hatred.
