Born in Chascomús, Argentina, on March 12, 1927, Raúl Alfonsín was an Argentine lawyer, politician and is known best for being the first democratically elected president of Argentina. His presidency was plagued with economic depression and a discontented military, but Alfonsín remained dedicated to democracy, and for a short while, met with some success—even after leaving office. Alfonsín remained an influential figure in politics in his later years. He died on March 31, 2009, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
