Prince Rupert, 17th century soldier and statesman, is best known for his talent as a Royalist commander of the English Civil War (1642 - 1651). His family fled Bohemia to the Dutch Republic where Rupert grew up. He fought in the Thirty Years' war, the Eighty Years' War and in the Third Anglo-Dutch wars eventually settling in England to pursue scientific invention and art until his death in 1682.
