Philip biography

Profile

Philip of Swabia was a German Hohenstaufen king elected in 1198 and spent the first decade of his rule engaged in civil war against the emperor Otto VI who wanted the crown. The conflict was settled by a truce in 1207 and in 1208 Pope Innocent III recognized Philip as king but was murdered by Otto of Wittelsbach, to whom he had refused to give one of his daughters in marriage.
