Profile

Dutch colonial governor Peter Stuyvesant became director general of all Dutch possessions in North America and the Caribbean in 1645. Upon his arrival in New Amsterdam, he established a council and the first municipal government for the city. In August 1664, Stuyvesant was forced to surrender New Netherland to the British and New Amsterdam became New York City.
