Peter Minuit was a Dutch colonial governor who traveled to North America under the Dutch West India Company in 1625. He is credited with purchasing the island of Manhattan Island from the Indians for 60 Dutch guilders. He later helped to found the first Swedish colony in America, New Sweden, on the lower Delaware River. He died in a tropical storm in the Caribbean in 1638.
