American industrialist and inventor Peter Cooper designed and built the first steam locomotive in the United States in 1830. After a successful career in the business and manufacturing industry, Cooper founded Cooper Union in New York City which offered free courses in science, engineering and art. He ran for president under the Greenback Party ticket in 1876.
