Born in St. Petersburg in 1754, Paul I of Russia had a reputation for being tyrannical and capricious. The son of Catherine II, Paul was raised by his father's aunt. After inheriting the throne in 1796, against Catherine's intentions, Paul reversed many of her policies. His actions as emperor provoked the hostility of the nobles, who turned against him. He was assassinated in 1801.
