Oscar Arias Sánchez was born into a wealthy, coffee-growing family on September 13, 1941, in Heredia, Costa Rica. After getting his Ph.D. from the University of Exxex, he began working for the National Liberation Party. From 1972 to 1977, he served as minister of planning under President José Figueres Ferrer. In 1986, he was elected president of Costa Rica, a position he held until 2010.
