Nnamdi Azikiwe was born on November 16, 1904, in Zungeru, Nigeria. In 1934, he founded a newspaper in what is now Ghana and mentored Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president. He returned to Nigeria in 1937, founded and edited newspapers and became active in politics. He served the first president of independent Nigeria from 1963 to 1966. He died on May 11, 1996.
