Mohammed was the founder of the religion of Islam, accepted by Muslims throughout the world as the last of the prophets of God.
Mohammed was born in 570 in Mecca, now in Saudi Arabia. His father died before he was born and he was raised in the desert. At age 40, Mohammed had the first of a series of revelations that became the basis for the Koran and the foundation of Islam. Through a combination of diplomacy and force, Mohammed united most of Arabia. He died in 632, the year of the first Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca.
