Modest Mussorgsky was born on March 21, 1839, in Karevo, Russia. Mussorgsky began composing in his teens, without formal training. He later resigned from the military to devote himself to music, and held a series of government jobs until alcoholism made him unemployable. His major works include "Night on Bald Mountain," "Boris Godunov" and "Pictures at an Exhibition." Mussorgsky died on March 28, 1881, in St. Petersburg.
