Milt Jackson was born on January 1, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan. He began playing the vibraphone at age 16 and joined Dizzy Gillespie's sextet in 1945. Jackson was a cofounder of the Modern Jazz Quartet, and recorded classic sessions with Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, and others. Jackson died in 1999.
