Michel Foucault was born on October 15 1926 in Poitiers, France. He was a French philosopher and historian and became one of the most influential and controversial scholars of the post-World War II period. His best known works are Discipline and Punish and the multi-volume, but incomplete, The History of Sexuality. Foucault died of AIDS-related septicemia in 1984.
