Melvil Dewey biography
Melvil Dewey was born on December 10, 1851, in Adams Center, New York. He graduated from Amherst College, where he served as acting librarian. In 1876, Dewey outlined his Dewey Decimal Classification system for cataloging books and library materials. He was a founder of the American Library Association and the Library Journal, and he set up the first U.S. institution for training librarians. Dewey died in 1931.
