Mary Astor was born on May 3, 1906 in Quincy, Illinois. She began acting during the silent film era and took John Barrymore as both mentor and lover. Her most famous role was in The Maltese Falcon, opposite Humphrey Bogart. Astor earned an Oscar for best supporting actress for The Great Lie. Her affair with playwright George S. Kaufman caused a huge scandal at the time. Astor died in 1987.
