An influential teacher in the 19th century, theologian Mark Hopkins stressed moral values over intellectual achievement and self-education over dogmatic education.
Born in Massachusetts in 1802, Mark Hopkins was one of the most influential teachers and theologians of the 19th century, counting U.S. President James Garfield among his pupils. He served as president of Williams College for over 30 years.
