With the overthrow of the monarchy in the insurrection of August 1792, Louis-Charles, the son of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette, was imprisoned with the rest of the royal family in Paris. Louis XVI was beheaded in January 1793, and French émigrés proclaimed Louis-Charles the new king of France. He spent his entire “reign” in hiding or in prison and died at age 10, imprisoned.
