Linus Pauling was awarded the 1954 Nobel Prize for Chemistry “for his research into the nature of the chemical bond and its application to the elucidation of the structure of complex substances.” He was awarded another Nobel (1962) for peace, for his crusade to stop the atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons, on October 10, 1963, the date that the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty went into effect.
