In January 1891, Liliuokalani ascended the Hawaiian throne, becoming the first woman ever to occupy it. She opposed granting special privileges to the U.S. and ceding to them the port of Pearl Harbor. She was asked to step down in January 1893 and a provisional government was announced, pending annexation by the U.S. On January 24, 1895, she formally abdicated.
