Kim Young-Sam was first elected to the National Assembly in 1954. He was successively reelected until 1979, when he was expelled. After Pres. Park Chung Hee assassination, it was assumed that Kim would be a contender in the presidential election, but Kim was put under house arrest; and banned from political activity. His house arrest was lifted 1983, and he resumed his political activity in 1985.
