Juan Carlos Onetti was born on July 1, 1909, in Montevideo, Uruguay. His first published work was the novella El pozo (1939; The Pit). Onetti lived in Buenos Aires from 1943 to 1955, working as a journalist. He wrote his best-known novel, La vida breve (A Brief Life) in 1950. Onetti returned to Montevideo in 1955. His next major novel was El astillero (1961; The Shipyard).
