In the 1950s, Joseph Kasavubu sought an independent Congo. He became president (1955) of Abako (Alliance des Ba-Kongo). In the Congo's first national elections in 1960, the Congo's first premier's party outpolled Abako, but neither side could form a parliamentary coalition. As a compromise they formed an uneasy partnership. Shortly after independence Kasavubu ousted him.
