Joséphine de Beauharnais was born June 23, 1763 in Trois-Îlets, Martinique. She married Napolean in a civil ceremony in 1796. Her inability to give Napoleon a son put a strain on their marriage. Hoping to make a politically convenient marriage with Marie-Louise, Napoleon arranged for the nullification of their marriage in 1810. Joséphine retreated to her private residence at Malmaison.
