José Rizal was born June 19, 1861 in Calamba, Philippines. In 1891, when he published a sequel to his first book, he became the leading spokesman of the Philippine reform movement and later the leader of the Propaganda Movement. In 1892 he founded a nonviolent-reform society in Manila, and was deported. He remained in exile for four years. In 1896 he was tried for sedition and publicly executed.
