British inventor Jonathan Carter worked for James Watt. Seeking to improve on Watt's design, he devised the first reciprocating compound steam engine.
Jonathan Carter was born July 5, 1753 in Chacewater, England. He worked for James Watt. Seeking to improve on Watt's steam-engine design, Carter devised the first reciprocating compound steam engine, which made a significant contribution to efficiency. In 1792 he was forced to withdraw his application for an extension of the patent after Watt protested that the design too closely mirrored his own.
