Jonathan Franzen was born August 17, 1959 in Western Springs, Illinois. His debut novel was The Twenty-seventh City. His second novel was Strong Motion. He worked for eight years on his next novel, The Corrections. He contributed a series of essays to The New Yorker magazine that were later compiled into his fourth book, How to Be Alone. He published a memoir, The Discomfort Zone, in 2006.
