John Pope biography

Following the outbreak of the Civil War, John Pope was made brigadier general and promoted to major general in 1862. He was later made a brigadier general of the regular army and given command of the Army of Virginia. In 1862 a Confederate force moved toward his army and Pope misgauged the number and location of the enemy. The result was the decisive defeat at the Second Battle of Bull Run.
