John Parker Hale biography

John Parker Hale was born March 31, 1806 in Rochester, New Hampshire. In 1834 he was appointed U.S. district attorney until 1841. The following year he won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he came to prominence as a champion of anti-slavery. In 1846 he won a seat in the U.S. Senate. His major achievement as a senator was the passage of a bill abolishing flogging in the Navy.
