John Marshall Harlan biography

John Harlan was born June 1, 1833 in Boyle County, Kentucky. In 1877, he was appointed to the Supreme Court. He issued a dissent in Pollock v. Farmers' Loan and Trust Co. (1895), and dissented from the Supreme Court's ruling in the Civil Rights cases (1883) that Congress could not punish discrimination against blacks by private persons. Among his dissents was that in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896).
