John Jay was born December 12, 1745, in New York City. He established important judicial precedents as the first chief justice of the United States (1789–1795) and negotiated the Jay Treaty of 1794, which settled major grievances with Great Britain and promoted commercial prosperity. He was elected N.Y. governor in 1795, an office from which he retired to spend the rest of his life on his farm.
