John D. McArthur was christened September 3, 1767, in Stoke Damerel, England. In 1789 he went to Australia as a lieutenant in the New South Wales Corps. In 1801 he was sent to England, where he interested manufacturers in the prospect of establishing a wool industry in Australia. By 1830 he had enlarged his grazing estate to more than 60,000 acres, becoming the dominant force in the wool trade.
