John Cox Stevens biography
John Cox Stevens was born in New York City in 1749. After serving in the American Revolutionary War, Stevens became interested in American steamboat pioneers James Rumsey and John Fitch, and he developed a number of designs of his own for boilers and engines. It was with the view of protecting his inventions that Stevens submitted to Congress his outline for a patent law, which resulted in the Patent Law of 1790, the basis of the present U.S. patent system. He died in Hoboken, New Jersey, on March 6, 1838.
